EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK WAVE LITHOTRIPSY (ESWL)

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a type of treatment for kidney stones. It uses high-energy shock waves to break down the kidney stones into small enough fragments to pass out of your body in your urine.

ESWL is done without the need for a surgical intervention; it only uses a machine called a shock wave generator to deliver the treatment. The procedure takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on how big your kidney stone is. Ultrasonic devices are generally used during this procedure. The stone movements are kept under constant control by monitoring during the process.

The energy pulses coming from the electromagnetic shock source are focused and reflected by the parabolic reflector, creating mini shock waves at a small point on the stone, and this breaks the stone. Afterward, the patient throws out the resulting pieces of sand and stone through urine.
