DERMATOLOGY
Dermatology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the skin, hair, nails, mouth, and genitalia. Cosmetic care and enhancement are also provided in this branch. Dermatology is basically the scientific study of the skin.
Dermatologists provide medical care for a wide range of conditions that affect the skin, hair, and nails, including but not limited to:
1. Skin disorders: such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis, skin infections, and skin cancer. They may perform skin biopsies, prescribe medications, and provide other medical treatments.
2. Hair and scalp disorders: such as hair loss (alopecia), dandruff, scalp infections, and other hair and scalp disorders.
3. Nail disorders: such as fungal nail infections, ingrown nails, and other nail abnormalities.
4. Skin cancer screening and treatment: the most common type of cancer in the United States. They may perform skin cancer screenings, perform biopsies, and provide treatments for skin cancer, including surgery and other therapies.
5. Allergies and immunologic skin disorders: such as contact dermatitis, hives, and other skin manifestations of systemic diseases
